The New Pyramid Scheme

A recent study showed that people who ate at least three servings of whole-grain foods per day were less likely to have metabolic syndrome. This condition is a combination of abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and poor blood sugar control; increasing the risk for diabetes and heart disease.

Just by replacing white rice with brown rice and items with white flour with whole wheat, you can make a substantial improvement.

The National Cancer Institute began the “5 a Day for Better Health” campaign several years ago to encourage people to eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day. Fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber and other substances that are important for good health. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. You can read more about the health benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables at http://www.5aday.gov/homepage/index_content.html

The USDA has recently released its new food pyramid. This new pyramid is considerably more complex than the old one, but the intent was to make the nutritional recommendations more appropriate for different age groups, genders and those with different activity levels. The USDA MyPyramid website offers a wealth of information.
